Two Small Farms
Today is the first day of the veggie box from our CSA. If you've never connected yourself to a local food grower, I highly recommend it. It's good for your tummy, the land, the farmer, the kids — and, sometimes you get to bottle feed a baby goat.
On a different vegetable note:
One of my goals this summer is to make home-canned vegetable soup. I've had a pressure canner for years and I've always been afraid of it. I've lost the directions, so it's even scarier. It's like these.
And, thanks to Julia for the photos. I don't get many photos of me with the kids, goat or otherwise.

hello, I just discovered your blog - was prompted to post because my little guy needs to have a cavity filled, too - though they will be restraining him rather than using general anesthesia - have felt like a guilty mama since then, like it is wrong of me to nurse so much! Pleased to see there are others out there with these problems, whose kids weren't given pepsi in a baby bottle!
I just signed up with Two Small Farms...I'm hoping to get my first box next week. Share what you get and what you're making please!!!!!!
Holey Cripes!
That is a M A C H I N E!
Do you need one of those scary things to can soup? Can't you just put it in glass jars like jelly??? I do freezer jam - but have yet to attempt the glass jars correctly. Any direction/tutorials you want to do are fine by me (hint, hint!) :)
BTW, not allergic reaction to cotton/poly - but dr called to say allergic to 'cillan family. Ugh. Always something with them isn't it???
i've had great luck finding product manuals on the internet. if your canner monster has a model number on it you might be able to find directions for it with some google searching. good luck!
You can download the instructions...

oh yeah, use that baby... i haven't ever, but i would if i had one. and can tomatoes, and peaches. i stick to pickles because of the acid and they sure are good, but man... think of the world that bad boy would open up for me... i want to hear all about it.
Goats!
My husband and I have our first ever compost pile and square foot garden this year. Husband is in charge of it all but I get my instructions on what to do and why we do it that way. I'm glad he knows what he's doing because I sure don't . lol
That pressure cooker is coolio, yay for you!
A friend of mine did the veggie box for some time and she loved it--introduced her to food she hadn't tried before and forced her to get creative. I'm so tempted to do it, especially if you throw in baby goats to boot.
So jealous! We've still got snow on the ground here so our 1st CSA delivery is a long way off.
My Grandmother used to scare me have to death when she was canning- She would shoo me away from the stove and say watch out- that can fly off and put your eye out! The top of the pressure cooker thing- I wish I could can like her- maybe someday if I ever have a garden- or maybe I can find a local farm here- In the Spring I start going back to the Farmer's Market downtown- It's great but you have to get there early!! If you do can with the presser cooker- wear goggles! xxxooo kim
I've been part of a CSA for several years. Two different ones. The first one was fabulous and we ate like bunnies those springs, summers and falls. The 2nd CSA (just last year) was definitely not up to par with the previous one. Sadly, this year I have no CSA to join. But I do have high hopes for my veggie garden.
This is not a very profound comment but I have to say I really like those two photos!
I wanna learn to can this summer too! I have been freezing our gardens bounty, but bought 1/4 a cow this Feb and it is taking up all the freezer space in town! I'm scared too... Why is it so scary??
