The Original Green Kitchen
Some people have wondered where the name came from. It's not as cool and eco-based as it seems — it was, literally, just a green kitchen.
I lived in this house, known as the Red House, with my sister from 1994 to 1997. It's an old farm house with solid wood walls and a porch that wraps around two sides. It sits at the end of an industrial neighborhood, which was good for late night musical happenings.
For awhile we lived there with another set of sisters. We all learned to swing dance and wore a hole in the paint on the wooden floor with all our one-two-rock-steps.

There's nothing like living with a sister. :)
I think it's even cooler now that I know the meaning behind Green Kitchen... I love it!
And I've always been curious too. One mystery solved... 4,253 more to go.
At last! Many a kitchen have I had with the water heater inconviently tucked in the corner (count in my current one) but never has it had such a kickass cool industrial vent pipe.
Old Round: I guess it was because we had a machinist for a landlord. The whole house had electrical run through conduit on the walls because running it through wood walls would be difficult. I thought it looked cool.
I love old stoves. And that color looks like my bedroom color - I am a fan of the yellow-green.
That looks like a great place...I love the stove!
I remember the first time I came over (after I had gotten over myself enough to actually be friendly to you). You had a picture cut out of a magazine, which depicted a kitchen painted the color of this green kitchen. The thing that I liked? I had cut the same picture out of the same magazine because I loved it. But you actually painted your kitchen that color. I knew then...something. Whatever it was. And now, 13 years later, I still like that green kitchen as well as you, Green Kitchen.
love that image...two pair of sisters swing dancing till the paint wears off.
Those were the days!
Love that stove and kitchen.
I lived in a house called The Red House in Portland OR for a couple of years. The heat vents only went into one bedroom for some reason and it wasn't mine unfortunately. My memories mostly consist of sleeping with hat on all winter. OK I'm rambling...
great stove and the wall pocket for utensils is a great idea! Like the color green too.
love swing dancing! sounds like some great nights...
our kitchen is going to be green, too, 'tarragon glory 6'! it was all supposed to be done by friday but that's not going to happen now, but soon, soon, i will cook in a green kitchen!
I've never lived with my sister, I'm not sure how that would work out. But you and yours seem so in sync. I love the green kitchen.
Well, maybe you can tell from the name of my site, www.thesisterproject.com, but I'd love to hear more about living with sisters - particularly the swing dance phase.
Best,
Marion
