Advent Calendars 1976
I was going to put together the list of all the advent loveliness out there, but Steph beat me to it. This photo is from Christmas 1976—I was eight and my sister was three. We're standing in our white, faux-wood paneled living room next to our Advent calendars that my mom put together with something like interfacing and Liquid Embroidery. I got to draw the scene on the top of mine, but mom did the Santa for sis. Each day had a present tied with ribbon to a little ring. I remember exactly what the rings looked like, how the ribbon felt, how cold the linoleum was. I probably examined each present for hours, never sneaking a peek, although I did do that with the big presents. I think the secret was that they were wrapped well and had lots of ribbon to keep it secure to the calendar.
It will be a year or two before I get it together to do an Advent calendar for my boys. So far I only have one present for Christmas, let alone Advent!
Go check out Kim's photo that my four-year-old thought was me.

The thing that you don't mention, and that deserves mention, is how totally excellent your outfit is in this picture.
Yes, Blaize, I forgot. When I posted on Flickr, though, I added tags for bellbottoms, crochet, 1976, etc. I was thinking about it, just didn't make it into the post.
The Flickr tags should also include the terms "groovy" and "fabulous."
I remember this pair of pants my mom made for me when I was a couple of years younger than you are in the picture. The fabric was yellow, with a loud and larger print of abstract flowers. I LOVED them. Then, one day, I was out in the front yard under the snowberry bushes, trying to set a trap for the White Hippopotamus (Mom said he lived in the coal bin) with a string, a weight, and some smooshy tomatoes for bait, and the pants got one of those sudden holes in the knee. I must have been 5 or 6, and I looked down at the hole, and, since I knew that holes like that spelt the inevitable end, I felt sad, because I LOVED those pants.
what a great calendar! i love that they are for each of you and that you didn't have to share. the idea of tying the presents to a ring is great! and, as blaize said, the wardrobe is nothing short of spectacular!
My boys will have to wait another year for advent calendars too...I just didnt get to it this year, too many other amazing things to make. Love the photo! That crocheted vest rocks!
that is soooo funny. I even had a crocheted vest like that in white. were we twins! separated at birth? ;))))
My grandmother had ballpoint paints aka liquid embroidery. They totally smelled like Sharpies and were always a total mess. I did love to use them, though.
You guys are total cuties. That vest *is* both fabulous and groovy.
